LOWER RANK SUMMER CAMP ADVANCEMENT
Here are the Advancement Goals for the Lower Ranks! Your Patrol Leaders have been told about this, as have the adult leaders. Be sure to ask them how to get this all done. Insist they help you do it!
HOW THINGS SHOULD WORK--ALL of this should get done at camp if it's on your personal list (see below).
Don't let the leadership get away with not providing this stuff! Your PL knows what you need and should be bringing that up at PLC meetings--ask him about it. If he has no answers, bug the adult leaders about it. Don't leave camp without it.
Animal ID for 2nd Class--Starting on the first or second day of camp, and adult leader in charge of this should show you where to get the Animal ID books and how to use them. You get five for free: the squirrel, the deer, the rabbit, and two birds of your choice that you've seen in River Edge. You need five mammals or birds you can identify at camp, giving you a total of 10. Submit a written, annotated list of all 10 to the adult in charge by Wednesday or Thursday of the second week. Your list must show a) species name; b) habitat and range; c) where you've seen it; d) two or three interesting facts from the write up in the book.
Knife, Ax, Saw for Second and First Class--that's a daily class run by the adult leaders.
Lashing & Gadget for 1st Class--that's a class run by the LC, with the ultimate goal of making a gateway for the Gateway Competition.
Plant ID for First Class--Starting on the first or second day of camp, and adult leader in charge of this should show you where to get the Tree ID books and how to use them. You need 10 trees you can identify at camp. Submit a written, annotated list of all 10 to the adult in charge by Wednesday or Thursday of the second week. Your list must show a) species name; b) habitat and range; c) where you've seen it; d) two or three interesting facts from the write up in the book.
Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle for 1st Class--During the first week, set up a pad where your patrol members can log everything they don't use, return during foor return, or throw out. Include the number of garbage bags you send out at garbage return. Do that for each meal and each day. Then, with your patrol, make a plan to do better. During the second week, see how you do.
SMC--request that from Mr. Mendoza or his acting Scoutmaster
Stove for Second Class--that's a one hour class run by the adult leaders.
Swimming for Second Class--pass the beginner swim test the first day of camp, get your sig
Swimming for First Class--pass the swimmer test the first day of camp, get your sig. Swimmer also gets you the beginner sig. For the Line Rescue, if you pass Swimming mb, get your sig. Not in Swimming MB? Ask the adult leaders when and how to get the line rescue done at the Waterfront. Do this at camp; you can't get it at home!
THE GOALS EACH LOWER RANK SCOUT SHOULD PERSUE--Don't leave camp without it!
